The new generation of the i30 has been released in the late 2016 and since then it managed to impress quite a few people. It drives considerably better than its predecessor and with it Hyundai went for a more conventional design. Not that long ago they also released the 2018 Hyundai i30 Tourer after many rumors about it being discontinued. Like before the Tourer is the wagon version of the i30. It sports a longer wheelbase and longer rear overhangs. Because of that it boasts a considerably larger trunk than its hatch version. It also has more available room for the rear seats so there aren’t any real drawbacks over the usual model.

Unfortunately so far the car wasn’t tested on the open roads so we still don’t have much information about its handling. Despite that, considering it uses the same platform as the hatchback, it shouldn’t be all that different. The car is not much heavier and the stiffness is the same as before.

It might be slightly slower to 60 MPH than the regular model but in terms of handling and speed it should be just as good which is usually not that easy to do with a wagon. Hyundai hasn’t revealed the price so far but it seems the i30 Tourer will be around 5 to 10% more expensive than the hatchback. At this price point it will have plenty of competition but this shouldn’t be a large problem considering how well equipped Hyundai’s cars usually come.

The looks – inside and out

Let’s start with the interior of the 2018 Hyundai i30 Tourer. There aren’t that many differences between it and the regular i30. The dashboard sports the same clean and elegant design found on the hatchback. The large infotainment screen is still going to be available as standard and the car will feature better than average materials throughout the cabin.

A sporty model might also be launched with the Tourer which could boast the same red interior accents, sports seats and steering wheel as the i30. The largest difference is the trunk where the Tourer features anchoring points, sliding tethering points as well as even a 12V socket and LED lights.

The car’s exterior is even more impressive than the interior. Somehow Hyundai managed to make one of the first good looking small wagons around. From the profile it looks remarkably similar to a shooting brake. The car features a sloping roof and even a roof spoiler, so it looks a lot sportier than most suggested. The hatch door is slightly smaller than on its rivals but this is the only real drawback with it.

2018 Hyundai i30 Tourer Engine

The 2018 Hyundai i30 Tourer will be available with a rather wide range of engines. The base model will receive a 1.0 liter 3 cylinder turbocharged mill good for close to 120 horsepower. For those wanting a bit more there is also going to be a new generation 1.4 liter turbo-four with nearly 140 horsepower. Both of these engines will come equipped with either a 6 speed manual or with a dual-clutch gearbox, likely the 7 speed unit currently found on some of their models. So far it seems that there is going to be just a single diesel engine available at launch. The 1.6 liter unit will deliver 109 horsepower and north of 280 Nm of torque, so it should be able to meet most people’s demands. This is likely going to be offered with a 6 speed manual and likely a different automatic in order to take advantage of the extra torque. Unfortunately an all wheel drive model is not going to be available which is disappointing considering some of its rivals do come in AWD trim.
