Introduction
Despite currently making only 4 and 5 doors electric cars, Tesla actually started with the Roadster, a 2-door sports car that was impressively successful for its time. Interestingly enough, it seems the Roadster is not going to be their last sports car. Back in March Elon Musk responded to a tweet in which he said the Model S will be their fastest Tesla until the release of the new Roadster. He also pointed the car is a few years away which basically confirms the rumors about the 2024 Tesla Supercar. It seems that this car will be an all new design and it should easily become the fastest and most powerful production electric car on the market. There are still many unknown facts about it. Even so, it seems the car will be Tesla’s most expensive vehicle to date. It also seems that they may decide to employ a third party in order to help them develop the car’s chassis.
In detail
It is a well known fact the first generation of the Roadster was built in cooperation with Lotus. Thanks to that the car managed to drive incredibly well for how heavy it was. Some suggested that it successor may be a car built entirely by Tesla. While this would make sense we wouldn’t really be so sure about it. Considering what Elon said, it is safe to assume that he is looking to offer a complete package and not just a car fast in a straight line.
Because of that Tesla may work with Lotus, or another sports car manufacturer, in the future. This would allow them to get insight on the world of sports cars and it would give Tesla a huge advantage because their current cars are good but none of them is that great to drive. A third party would allow them to change that and they may even put that new knowledge into use on their future models as well.
The design
At this point there are quite a few available rumors about the 2024 Tesla Supercar but unfortunately none of them has been confirmed. Even so it seems that most of them think Tesla will work either with Toyota or with BMW for their next car. In the past they also worked with Mercedes and Lotus, so things might change. Tesla is expected to offer a two-door convertible, similar to the original.
However, this time around the design might be based on that of a front-engine supercar, similar to Toyota’s FT-1 concept. If this is the case then the 2024 Tesla supercar could become one of the most impressive cars to look at on the electric car market. Its front end, and possibly the rear, will likely share design cues with their other models. However, everything else is going to be all new.
2020 Tesla Supercar interior
Due to its name, Roadster, the new Tesla supercar is definitely going to be a two-door car offering just two seats inside the cabin. Thanks to its new design, the car is likely going to feature a new interior with a wide center console that will give the driver a cockpit-like experience.
The all digital instrument cluster and infotainment system should still be there. However, the car will offer a much more different experience than what they currently offer with the Model S.
The powerplant
Elon confirmed the 2024 Tesla Supercar will be able to run the quarter mile in under 11.0 seconds. In contrast, a petrol powered car offering around 675 horsepower will do the quarter mile in around 10.5 seconds. Because of that it is safe to assume the new Tesla will offer in excess of 600 horsepower and likely north of 600 lb-ft of torque. All that power is expected to be routed to the rear wheels via a one or two-speed gearbox. The electric motor will offer its maximum torque from 1 RPM so it should be quite electrifying to drive. The car is expected to boast a maximum top speed well over the 155 MPH currently offered by Tesla’s fastest car in production. Some also suggested a more powerful version will also be available. Like with their other cars, the new Roadster is also expected to offer north of 300 miles of all electric range. It will also support SuperCharging, so it should be as usable as their other cars too.
